Dozens compete across 14 sports: fencing, tennis, triathlon and bridge headline HKU success.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is celebrating a proud moment for its Sport Scholars, who combined medal-winning performances with broad representation across disciplines at the 15th National Games. In a campaign that showcased the University’s commitment to nurturing both academic ambition and elite sporting achievement, HKU students earned podium finishes in fencing, triathlon, tennis and bridge while competing across 14 sports as part of the Hong Kong team.

Hong Kong’s men’s foil team, featuring HKU elite athletes Ryan CHOI Chun Yin and Lawrence NG Lok Wang alongside teammates CHEUNG Ka Long and LEUNG Chin Yu, secured a historic fencing gold with a 45–34 victory over Fujian. After the match, Lawrence remarked, “As long as you give your best, every moment is glorious.” Ryan added that, after making strategic adjustments, their performance improved.

HO Sze Long Aaron delivered a standout performance in the men’s sabre, taking silver after a composed run through a world-class field. Reflecting on the experience, Ho said, “At the peak of success, exercise caution; in the depths of adversity, maintain composure.” He added that continuous effort and striving for excellence were key pillars of his season.

In triathlon, Sports Scholars Bailee BROWN and Robin ELG Bent Edvin Thomas helped power Hong Kong to silver in the high-intensity mixed relay. “The harder I work, the luckier I get,” said Brown, praising the relay’s unity and preparation. Robin added, “Success lies not in the outcome but in the effort. Being the best isn’t what matters—giving your all is everything.”

HKU Sport Scholar Coleman WONG claimed bronze in the men’s singles tennis event. This historic achievement marks the Hong Kong team’s first-ever medal in this category and makes Coleman the first Hong Kong athlete to secure a men’s singles medal at the National Games.

Rounding out the medal haul, bridge player CHIANG Shing Hin contributed to Hong Kong’s bronze in the Men’s Youth Team event. “We were ranked seventh heading into the final match of the round-robin, a position that offered little hope of reaching the semi-finals,” Chiang said. “Yet our team refused to surrender, unleashing our full potential to crush the last match 20–0. Never give up!”

These highlights sit within a wider story of participation and perseverance. More than 30 HKU student-athletes took part across a diverse slate of sports, including athletics, fencing, triathlon, tennis, badminton, swimming, sailing, rugby, 3x3 basketball, water polo, windsurfing and wingfoil, table tennis and para table tennis. Their presence on the national stage—balancing coursework, training and competition—speaks to the University’s strong support and the resolve of the athletes themselves. The HKU community of students, staff and alumni has rallied behind the team, following results, sharing encouragement and celebrating the values that sport brings to campus life.

“Through our admissions schemes for sports scholars, HKU actively supports their dual development in academics and athletics, and we look forward to their continued success on the international stage,” reflected Dr Michael Tse, Director of the Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE). HKU’s pathway for elite competitors includes the Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme (TADAS), which recognises exceptional sporting achievement in the admissions process and connects student-athletes to personalised academic advising and flexible learning arrangements, counselling, and strength and conditioning training.

Equally important is the inclusive spirit of Team HKU. Alongside medal-winning performances, the University’s participation in both able-bodied and para sports underscores a commitment to opportunity and accessibility in sport. Whether on the track, in the pool, on road courses or at the card table, the common thread is a culture that values teamwork, humility, resilience and the pursuit of excellence.

As the National Games journey continues, we invite the HKU community to stand behind our scholar-athletes—on the field, in the classroom and everywhere ambition leads. Follow our student-athletes at @TeamHKU and help celebrate a culture where effort meets excellence.
