The HKU Men’s Basketball team contested an exciting Championship match in the Sun Life USFHK Men's Basketball Competition, narrowly losing 74-72 to CUHK to secure the 1st runner-up position at Southorn Stadium on 11 April 2026.

A Game of Momentum Swings

HKU set the tone early in an electrifying final. Late in the opening quarter, the team produced a commanding 12–0 scoring run to edge ahead 15–12, igniting the home supporters and establishing early control of the contest. Strong defensive pressure and composed execution allowed HKU to maintain the upper hand through much of the game.

Despite determined resistance from CUHK, HKU entered the fourth quarter with a 12‑point advantage, appearing firmly on course as the atmosphere inside Southorn Stadium reached fever pitch.

However, the final quarter turned into a dramatic scene comparable to a championship battle. CUHK mounted a spirited comeback with a decisive 23–9 surge, closing the gap and eventually taking a narrow lead in the closing moments.

HKU responded with trademark resilience. In the final minute, team captain Kyle Tsang rose to the occasion, scoring five crucial points, including two pressure free throws that cut the deficit to just two points. With emotions running high and the crowd on its feet, CUHK managed to hold on in the final seconds, sealing a dramatic 74–72 finish as the buzzer sounded.

Pride, Passion, and Poise

Throughout the match, the HKU team showed outstanding grit, unity, and unwavering determination against strong opponents. The team’s discipline, intensity, and refusal to surrender were evident until the very last play, drawing warm applause from students, staff, alumni, families, and friends who filled the venue with steadfast support.

Kyle Tsang’s match-leading 27 points were another highlight in a truly memorable season for the team.

A Season of Unyielding Spirit

While CUHK claimed the crown, HKU’s close‑run finish serves as a powerful chapter in a season of bold achievements. Alongside their 1st runner-up position, they also represented HKU on the international stage at both the Asian University 3x3 Basketball Championship and the World University Basketball Series earlier in the season, showing incredible courage throughout.
