Redevelopment of Lindsay Ride Sports Centre and Stanley Smith Swimming Pool
28 Jul 2020

After serving for the HKU community for more than half a century, the Lindsay Ride Sports Centre and the Stanley Smith Swimming Pool have been closed permanently in early September, 2020.  As per the University’s planning, the aforesaid two CSE facilities, alongside the student/staff quarters at Pokfield Road, will be redeveloped in phases to a new campus hub. In this new campus hub a new Business School Academic Building, guest house & staff quarters, and an ultramodern sports complex nearly double in size with an indoor swimming pool, gym and other facilities, has been planned for our HKU community.

With this forthcoming redevelopment, the following sports facilities have become unavailable for our sports members’ use:

  • Stanley Smith Swimming Pool
  • Multipurpose Court adjacent to the Stanley Smith Swimming Pool
  • Various facilities located at Lindsay Ride Sports Centre (Fitness Room, the sports hall (for badminton, basketball, volleyball activities, etc.) and the Billiard Room.
  • Outdoor car park at the Lindsay Ride Sports Centre

We are sorry that, until the new sports facilities are built, there will be fewer facilities available for your use in the coming 2 - 3 years. We understand that this would not be ideal to our sports members and we sincerely apologize for it.  As such, in case current external sports members find the other CSE sports facilities at the Flora Ho Sports Centre and Stanley Ho Sports Centre will no longer meet your needs, you may wish to withdraw from your membership with no penalty and we are happy to refund the remaining portion of it on a pro-rata monthly basis.  We believe these redevelopments may not affect many external sports members, as many of you have preferred using the sports facilities at Stanley Ho Sports Centre.  If you do choose to withdraw your membership, please let us know by sending us an email to csehku@hku.hk and we will arrange the refund, in cheque payment, for you accordingly.  The refund will be centrally processed by the University's Finance Office and it will take about 1-2 months.

As many of you are aware, the HKU campus has never stopped evolving and indeed many different sites of the University have been or are being redeveloped over the years in order to keep abreast of the ever-changing learning and teaching needs. And we are excited that it is time now for CSE to have the opportunity to provide our users with brand new and state-of-the-art sports facilities in the foreseeable future.  Nonetheless, to this end, we have to go through a process that requires the rapport and cooperation from our various stakeholders.  Hence, your support and understanding of the CSE’s redevelopment needs will be highly appreciated.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at csehku@hku.hk. Thank you for your attention.
